The Driver Era is an alternative rock band by brothers Ross and Rocky Lynch. On June 28, 2019 they released their first album “X” with a tracklist of 10 songs. I have no idea how I came across this band, its not usually my type of music I am into (as most people know I have a known obsession with disco), but for some reason I fell in love with it. So after blasting the entire album for the past 6 months, I‘ve decided to rank each song from worst to best. But for the record I love all songs equally (except the first two).
#10: Giveuwhatuwant
This song gets the worst ranking because I don‘t really like it at all. The song is very slow, my biggest problem is that I feel like they build the song up but as soon as the chorus hits it doesn‘t go anywhere. Listening to it, its almost as if you‘re on a roller coaster going up and waiting for that drop, but it never comes.
#9: Preacher Man
This is an amazing song, I love it because it kind of has like an 80s pop beat to it, which already puts it at the top of my list, although it has its flaws (which is why its #9). I don‘t listen to it that much because the lyrics don‘t really have a deeper meaning, it just seems very plain.
#8: Natural
The song doesn‘t really have a meaning to it, but I think that it‘s about a guy at a club who sees this girl and falls in love with her. He admires her and wants to make a move but instead he‘s frozen by her beauty so he just watches her from afar. I like the song although after 6 months I still don‘t know the chorus
#7: Welcome to the End of Your Life
The title makes it seem like its a depressing song about how you feel hopeless in life, with no reason to go on, but that‘s not the case. The song is actually supposed to encourage you to get up and do something with your life, to live it with no regrets. The song starts off very slow and only picks it up during the chorus, but at the end of it they go from a slow song to an indie rock, which is why I like it better than the other songs.
#6: Nobody Knows
This song is about how you can get used to how consistent something is but in 6 months or so, that something you thought you knew is no longer there. I specifically like the chorus because it‘s describing a girl who just doesn‘t care what anyone else says or their opinion and she‘s just living her own life.
#5: Feel You Now
This song is about the struggle between your head and your heart. Fear or Love. THE BASS IN THIS SONG IS AMAZING. As SOON as the song starts you can literally feel the bass all moving the ground and the fact that it‘s consistent during the entire song really does not disappoint.
#4: Afterglow
This song is about a trip to Cabo Rocky and Ross took. On the trip Rocky met a girl one night, they had a strong connection and he talks about their time on the beach. He also mentions that he knows as soon as she leaves that will be it, and they‘ll never see each other again, which happens to be my favorite part of the song just because of the way its written.
#3: San Francisco
This song is about an experience Ross had with a past relationship where the trip they took to San Francisco was one of their happier times in the relationship. I personally love this song, because I got to spend last spring break in San Francisco, and I had probably one of the best times in my life. I was able to stop by a few places were they filmed one of my favorite movies and take pictures, so listening to that song always brings me those memories.
#2: Scared of Heights
There is no interpretation of the song but as you read the lyrics the meaning of it becomes obvious. The song is about a drug addict who insists that they are getting high for the last time but they‘ve been high for so long that their scared of the fall (sobering up), so instead they just take another hit. They know that it‘s not good for them, and they don‘t need anyone telling them. They also know that they don‘t need it to survive but they still can‘t help it. In the second verse they say how they almost stopped but couldn‘t resist. One of the best parts of the song is the outro where the drug addict keeps repeating the phrase “One more time. Just give me one more time.” until the song fades out.
#1: Low
This song was the first that introduced me to the Driver Era, which is why it‘s number one. Rocky said that the song is not necessarily about a specific person or about love, but just about feeling down. I love this song so much, Rocky‘s voice mixed with the strong and beautiful bass, I could just listened to it forever. Although it‘s not about love, I always interpreted it like, when you really like someone but you don‘t know how they feel and you feel like you‘re stuck and there‘s nowhere to go.
