On Turning 17

The whole idea of it makes me excited.

The kind of feeling you get when you finish,

something you dreaded.

I can finally breathe,

finally sleep.

No more stress,

no more loneliness,

no more anxiety.

At 17 I will no longer be stuck in this castle,

it will be my start to new beginnings.

God knows what it looks like,

but it will be just like I imagined it.

I'll be treated like a person.

People will no longer see me as a book,

where they write their problem,

dreams, hopes, and desires.

I'll be seen as an equal,

I will be able to have a conversation

without hiding my real self like a turtle in a shell.

At 17, I'm free.

But for now, I'm mostly in my room,

sitting at the edge of my bed,

listening to the world spin.

No longer taken over by sadness or loneliness,

only numbness.

I feel afloat,

I have left my body and look down upon her.

Greatness awaits you, I tell her,

she doesn't believe it but deep inside,

I know she feels it.

Like a storm,

except my storm will unleash things

never seen before.

This storm will introduce me to a long lost friend,

happiness.

My future is coming for me,

I used to think I was stuck in a castle,

with no hope for a rescue.

But now I hear the sound of it stomping.

Only, it's getting louder now.

My future is almost here,

and I am ready for it.
